This picture shows
the school as it appeared in the 1920's. The school
was located near where the California branch flows
into Pine Creek in Loucks Mills. Since the school
appears to be quite old, it is reasonable to belive
that Archie Loucks attended the school until he was
ten years old, when his father married Frances
Sherwood and they moved away to Mixstown hill and then
to Westfield. When Archie was eleven years old, his
family moved to Shinglehouse, Pennsylvania. The
Loucks Mills school was closed in 1946. According to
the "Potter County Historical Society Quarterly
Bulletin, Number 82, October 1986", where David Loucks got the
information about Hector Township schools, "because of
poor roads and harsh winters, most of the schools in
Hector were operated as summer schools. The students
had their vacation during the winter months when
travel was more difficult. School terms were not as
long as they are now - seven or eight months was the
average."
