Two different families are on this page - Figueroa and Hernandez. Funny story - Cruz Figueroa and Hortensia Hernandez each eventually have children, also named Cruz and Hortensia, who marry. Never knowing their parents lived next to each other at one time, or if they even knew it themselves.

  • Notes
    • Research on this family member has been difficult. Granddaughters of hers remember hearing that she was possibly sent to a hospital in California with leprosy and died there.

In trying to find records, I contacted a woman at the Nation Henson's Disease Center to try to find out more about the disease and treatment during that time frame. She stated that if our family member did have leprosy at that time, she would have been either deported or sent to their hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana - unless she had a special connection to a doctor in California that would have been willing to treat her, but that would have required a lot of money so not likely. She also said that many at the hospital would use aliases to avoid embarrassment for the family.

I looked into that time frame and read that there was mass deportation that included many, whether they were illegal or not. I even read that there was a lady in a California hospital who was being treated for leprosy, who was taken out on a gurney to a waiting ambulance, driven to the border and left there.

Ancestry gave me a hint recently showing a possible death record. I have attached it and am currently looking into it to see if this was her, if she had been deported. But I think that even if she was deported that she would have kept in contact with her family.
